There are plenty of better places to read a real summary of the race.
My highlights were:
- Simon Gerran’s amazing efforts, pulling the lead bunch along for as long as he did, and the HUGE cheer he got as he rolled up the finishing straight for the last time.
- The incredible cheer that EVERY bunch or rider got as they rode around. People on the finishing straight must have gone home with sore hands from belting the barriers for as long as they did.
- Watching the God of Thunder salute – Chapeau Thor!
But the real highlight – watching bike racing in a little pub near the waterfront in Geelong and not having some knob at the bar making comments about “poofs in lycra”.
I reckon cycle racing in Australia as a spectator sport took a huge leap forward on Sunday … let’s hope it’s the first of many.
